Dr. Olufemi Yeku

Program and Learning Objectives

8:45 am — Participants Log in

9:20 am — Welcome and Introductory Remarks

9:30 am — Overview of Medical Laboratory Risk Management

Presenter:

Diane P. Banks, PhD, MA, MPH, CLT (NYS), MLS(ASCP)

Descriptive Summary:

This presentation will focus on how risk can be detected and managed, both in a healthcare facility generally and within the laboratory specifically. Tools for proactively and reactively responding to situations affecting patient safety will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss why risk management is important in healthcare;
  2. Identify a typical risk management activity that starts from the identification of potential risks; and
  3. Discuss the three major processes within a clinical laboratory, namely pre-examination (pre-analytical), examination (analytical) and post-analytical.

10:30 am — Process Steps in Biosafety Risk Assessment in the Laboratory

Presenter:

Olufemi Yeku, MT (ASCP), MBA, MPH, DrPH

Descriptive Summary:

It is important to assess risks in clinical laboratories to ensure that labs operate effectively and generate accurate and reliable test results. Laboratories should be designed and operate in a safe manner to protect laboratory personnel, as well as those who may be exposed to laboratory operations. This presentation will focus on identifying and evaluating risks and implementing risk mitigation plans.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify risks and hazards in the laboratory;
  2. Evaluate risks;
  3. Implement a risk mitigation plan, as needed; and
  4. Analyze the effectiveness of controls.

11:30 am — Lunch Break

12:30 pm — Medical Laboratory Risk Assessment

Presenter:

Olufemi Yeku, MT (ASCP), MBA, MPH, DrPH

Descriptive Summary:

Medical laboratories can have a number of potential hazards, including biological, electrical and physical hazards; sharp items; chemicals; radioactive materials; and flammables and explosives. Evaluating risks and errors in pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic processes in the laboratory is important for achieving accurate and reliable test results. Once risks have been identified, control processes must be implemented and continuously monitored and modified to make certain risk is maintained at a clinically acceptable level. This presentation will discuss medical laboratory risk assessments with a focus on the recent COVID-19 pandemic and Ebola outbreak.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss what has been learned during the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of medical laboratory risk assessments; and
  2. Identify lessons learned during the Ebola outbreak in terms of medical laboratory risk assessments.

1:30 pm — Implementing Root Cause Analysis for Risk Management in the Clinical Laboratory

Presenter:

Diane P. Banks, PhD, MA, MPH, CLT (NYS), MLS (ASCP)

Descriptive Summary:

Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is a method for identifying the causes of faults or problems in order to determine appropriate solutions. This presentation will focus on the relationship between causes of problems in the clinical laboratory and fact-based and data-driven solutions to improve organizational processes. Ways to solve problems using RCA to help create, implement and standardize measures that lead to long-lasting results in the clinical laboratory will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand RCA terminology, goals, benefits and stakeholders;
  2. Describe root causes with cause-and-effect analysis, “5 Whys,” FMEA and other analytical tools;
  3. Explain problem-solving models used in RCA, including 8D, PDCA and DMAIC; and
  4. Identify root causes of problems in the clinical laboratory and develop potential solutions.

2:30 pm — Program Ends
